Marines: Portraits by Alastair Thain at Imperial War Museum North (rcvd 30th July)
Hi
Just wanted to drop you a quick line to let you know about our new external display here at Imperial War Museum North.
Marines, six large-scale photographic portraits of unknown British marines taken seconds after a tough training run - is exhibited against the backdrop of the dramatic museum architecture which reflects a globe shattered by conflict.
This is the first time that all six images have been displayed together and the first time that two of the photographs have been on public display. Each large-scale portrait reaches over 5 metres in height creating an incredible intimacy between the viewer and subject.
I attach a poster for your information, I would be grateful if you could pass this onto anybody whom you think may be interested in the display and related talk by Alastair Thain on 19 September. (not possible to attach poster - ed)
Best wishes
Sam

Environmental Photographer of the Year 2009 (rcvd 9th April)
CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) runs the Environmental Photographer of the Year, which is one of the fastest growing photographic competitions in the world. In 2008 we received over 1,400 entries from over 40 countries –we are hoping to increase this in the 2009 competition.
This is a serious competition that seeks to celebrate photographers who use their ability to raise awareness of environmental and social issues. It is open to all professional and amateur international photographers of any ages. This year’s categories are Changing Climates; A World of Difference; Quality of Life; The Natural World; and the Young Environmental Photographer of the Year (Under 21). EPOTY encourages entries that are contemporary, creative, experimental, resonant, original and beautiful.
The judging panel is made up of some of the most respected environmental photographers in the industry, including Gary Braasch, winner of the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography, as well as senior environmentalists. Individual pieces of work will be judged on impact, creativity, composition, originality and technical abilities. Winners receive cash prizes, and all winning and highly commended entries are displayed in the international Environmental Photographer of the Year exhibitions. Copyright is retained by the photographer (see terms and conditions at www.ciwem.org/arts/photographer <http://www.ciwem.org/arts/photographer> ).

Two exciting one-day courses that will examine all aspects of nature and wildlife photography including macro.
Dear Club Secretary,

I have worked with the US Fish and Wildlife Services at Bear River, Utah to provide some of the images displayed in their new education centre and with Blackpool Council providing images to promote their parks and open spaces. I have recently had illustrated articles published in Lancashire Life magazine and Birdwatcher’s Digest in the USA.
Please find attached course details.
Many thanks for your co-operation,

Photography course - Buxton 23-26 April 2009 (rcvd 2nd March)
ElectricLandscape run courses in digital photography in Buxton, the Brecon Beacons and the Thames Valley. They're ideal for people who've invested in a good camera and want to make the most of it, but also address the needs of more experienced photographers who'd like to improve their understanding of Photoshop or Elements. Customers say they enjoy our courses and learn a lot.
There are still vacancies on the four-day course in Buxton on 23-26 April 2009.
We also have vacancies on the four-day course in Brecon on 10-13 April 2009 (Easter).
The cost of a four-day course is just £295 including all catering, materials, etc. The content covers camera usage, image organisation, editing, inkjet printing - and we even spend the last hour mounting and framing a print for each customer.
Thanks.
